What is hydraulic cylinder and what is the purpose of hydraulic cylinder?

Hydraulic cylinder is used to convert hydrostatic energy into mechanical energy. They can produce work same as motors and actuators. Hydraulic cylinders are different from hydraulic motors but cylinders have linear movement than rotary movement. The force (F, Newton) in the hydraulic cylinder is directly proportional to the maximum operating pressure (P, Bars) and area (A, Cm2) of the piston.

Mathematics behind hydraulic cylinders, F=P*A (in Bars or Kg/cm2)

The area of the cylinder is difference between the area of the piston and the piston rod. The set pressure, cylinder with larger area will produce larger force.
